The Oppression and Liberation of Youth

B. Hyatt [online 1985]

This paper defines and examines the oppression of youth.  The project hypothesizes that the oppression of youth and the "internalizing" of this oppression is a major cause of powerlessness in society.  Relevant literature on youth, adolescence, and children's rights is reviewed.   A number of implications for social workers are suggested, including a need to reexamine values, attitudes and assumptions relating to youth and families, particularly ownership of children.
