There is a movement that has
constantly grown in stature, depth, and breadth for the last
100 years. It is subtle, yet overt; calm, yet boisterous.
Alternatively called the Youth Movement, the youth
organizing movement, or the Youth Voice Movement, it is been
the focus of The Freechild Project since 2001. As the School
Library Journal wrote in 2005, our website is "...by far the largest repository of projects, ideas,
and organizational links, [Freechild] provides more than
adequate information to help students brainstorm ideas in order
to start their own initiatives."
In 2006, Adam Fletcher, founder of
Freechild, worked with youth activist Joe Vavrus to write a
concise summary of every action and issue addressed by The Freechild Project
website. This Guide includes those summaries, along
with Fletcher's popular "Cycle of Youth Engagement," and a
site map that explores the extent of Freechild's resources. Today the Guide to Social Change Led By and With
Young People has been used by thousands of youth and
adults worldwide to learn more about what is happening and
what is being addressed by young people around the globe.
By delineating dozens of
examples of issues and actions addressed through this social
change, Fletcher and Vavrus provide an essential summary of
youth activism today. This guide also serves as an easy-to-use guide to
the Freechild website.
