Intro
The
Freechild Project believes that the machoism and sexism
inherent in many activist projects attempts
to derail many young women's ability to lead
and demand social change.
Point to Ponder
"...we
condemned them, our children, for seeking a different future. We hated
them for their flowers, for their love, and for their unmistakeable
rejection of every hideous, mistaken compromise that we had made
throughout our hollow, money-bitten, frightened, adult lives. -
June Jordan, "Moving
Towards Home: Political Essays".
Resources
Youth
researchers at The Freechild Project have
found the following organizations and
publications acknowledge and empower women
of all ages to stand up and use their power
- whether to create better situations for
women specifically or for society as a
whole.
Organizations
STAND
The mission of Students Take
Action for New Directions (STAND) is to empower young women to act
politically to promote peace, equality, and progressive social change.
STAND is a program of Women's Action for New Directions.
Collaborative Fund for Youth-led Social Change
The Collaborative Fund for
Youth-Led Social Change (the second round of the Collaborative Fund for
Healthy Girls/Healthy Women) is an innovative partnership among individual,
foundation and corporate donors and youth participants and program staff of
youth organizations. The Fund supports organizations working at the
intersection of positive youth development, youth-led social change and
gender-conscious programming.
Asian Pacific

The Asian Pacific Environmental Network in Oakland, California, works to
unify and empower low-income Asian and Pacific Islander communities around
environmental and social justice issues. APEN's Youth Initiative develops
the leadership and organizing capacity of young women as an integral
component of building a strong, democratic organization.

Young Women
and Leadership
By promoting a rights agenda by and for young
women around the world we work to create spaces where young women
can articulate their priorities and build leadership.
NOW
The historic American feminist organization
offers a huge site with lots of resources.
World
YWCA Young Women's Web
In these pages you can find news
of young women's activities in the YWCAs around the world, resources to
lobby for young women's full participation in YWCA decision-making, a
calendar of events, a review of international events related to young people
and different ideas and action from the point of view of youth. The young
women's web is your place.
Third
Wave Foundation
Only 6% of foundation dollars go
to support social change led by young women. The Third Wave Foundation
is raising that amount by providing resources to support the cutting-edge
work of young women activists. Through our grantmaking, we give direct
financial support to young women activists and the organizations they lead.
With Public Education Campaigns, we expand the pool of resources that
support this work by increasing financial resources as well as developing
future activists. And through our Networking programs, Third Wave
creates informational resources and opportunities to expand the knowledge
and skills that young women activists can draw on in their work.
Girls Action Media
Some of the young
women in our workshops are living below the poverty line, regularly facing
the death or incarceration of a close family member, in foster care, in and
out of the Juvenile Detention Center, or isolated by their families because
of their sexual orientation. We provide a unique service by focusing the
curriculum on the everyday challenges the girls face, teaching them how to
use technology/media creatively and enjoyably to examine and ultimately
transform their lives.
Events
National Young Women's
Day of Action "Día Nacional de Acción Para Mujeres Jovenes"
A grassroots campaign organized by and for young women.
It is an opportunity to activate young women around a reproductive rights
agenda that places reproductive and sexual freedom in the context of larger
goals: racial justice, economic justice, an end to punitive immigration and
welfare policies, the right to exist as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgendered people, accessible health care, freedom from violence, and
quality education.
